Other boards & toolchains

The Quickstart uses the ESP32-DevKitC. Every step is the same shape on any board — only two things change: the toolchain (which CPU your board uses) and the BOARD= value you pass. Here are the variants.

flintOS builds on two CPU families. Install the one your board uses.

Espressif ships a Rust fork; espup installs it.

Terminal window
cargo install espup espflash
espup install
. $HOME/export-esp.sh # PowerShell: . $env:USERPROFILE\export-esp.ps1

Boards: ESP32-DevKitC, ESP32-WROVER, M5Stack Atom Matrix, M5Stack Atom Lite, M5Stack Core2.

Stock Rust — add the target, plus elf2uf2-rs to pack the flashable image.

Terminal window
rustup target add thumbv6m-none-eabi
cargo install elf2uf2-rs

make flash enters BOOTSEL automatically over USB (a 1200bps touch) when the board is already running FlintOS with USB enabled — no button, no probe. For a first flash of a blank board, hold BOOTSEL while plugging in.

Boards: Raspberry Pi Pico, Wio RP2040 Mini.

The command is the same on every board — only BOARD= changes. make flash picks the right flasher for you: espflash over USB serial for an ESP32, a UF2 image for the RP2040.

Terminal window
make apps # list the example apps
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-esp32-devkitc # ESP32-DevKitC (reference)
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-esp32-wrover # ESP32-WROVER
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-m5-atom-matrix # M5Stack Atom Matrix
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-m5-atom-lite # M5Stack Atom Lite
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-m5-core2 # M5Stack Core2
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-raspberry-pi-pico # Raspberry Pi Pico (Arm)
make flash APP=demo BOARD=board-wio-rp2040-mini # Wio RP2040 Mini (Arm)

make flash with no BOARD lists the boards and stops. The full matrix, with what’s verified on hardware, is in Supported boards.
